1969 white nylon jersey # 66 In 1958, one year before the
arrival of the legendary Vince Lombardi, the Packers made Ray
Nitschke their number one draft pick. Nitschke became the
Packers stable linebacker throughout the 1960’s, helping them to
five Championship titles throughout the decade. In 1962 the
Packers won their second straight NFL Championship as Nitschke
earned MVP honors for his performance in the game. The merger of
the AFL and NFL in 1966 led to a title game that later would be
known as the Super Bowl. The Packers won the first two title
games with the help of Nitschke, who was the defensive leader.
In 1969, the NFL celebrated its 50th Anniversary. The Packers
played their first season without Lombardi, who decided to take
the head coaching position in Washington. |
